Things we learned this February

During the month of February, we discussed about night and day. The children learned that days are shorter and nights are longer during winter. We also learned the different activities that we do during night and day or animals that come at night only. These worksheets showed the learning of the children concerning this concept:

For the classic Jan Brett story, The Mitten, we did a sequence story of the animals that went into the mitten:

The children were asked to decide on their mitten pattern. They used coloured markers and crayons to accomplish the work:

During our Smartboard period, we learned about seasons. You can add this on your computer as a favourite on your web browser or on the desktop. Click on it:

For the concept of measurement, the children used linking cubes, sugar cubes and paper clips to measure the length of the mitten. Afterwhich, they can colour the mitten in any way that they want.

We have been learning a lot of poems. This is the latest poem, "Snowflakes, Snowflakes" , we are learning sung to the tune of "Are You Sleeping?":

During the month of February, we also have been reading some books to celebrate Black History Month. One of the stories that created a stir among the children was the story of Ruby Bridges:

The kids couldn't believe that an African American child couldn't go to a school where there are only Caucasian kids. They were scared for Ruby. They couldn't believe that people are stopping her from going to school. Reading the story to them brought a lot of discussion during carpet time. And the children said "Your colour does not matter." "What matters most is inside you." "Everybody should be friends." It is important to let our children celebrate our diversities and accept one another, regardless of our differences, whatever these may be.

Enjoy!

Mailbox in Kindergarten (for Valentine's Day and more!)

Using the Valentine's Day theme, the children can write letters to each other. I have created a template of a Valentine's Day message but the children are being creative with their cards to each other! The idea of writing messages and cards will be continued for the rest of the year for the following holidays and even just to encourage them to write kind messages to each other.

At the end of the day, the assigned Mail Person checks the mailbox and delivers the letters to the people on the carpet before home time!

Enjoy!
